Gwithti an Pystri Museum newsletter - February 2026

At Candlemass, the beginning of February, with the twilight of spring after a month of hibernation after Yule, Gwithti an Pystri once again began to grind in to motion. This pivotal moment was marked by the observation of the full moon rise over Trelil Holy well near Helston. On a sadder note we attended a remembrance ceremony put on by the Penzance moot down at the Union Hotel in Penzance for the passing of Brigitte Ariel Numan, a well known face in the pagan world. The wheel ever turns!
The doors have been open but visitor numbers are always low at this time of year, they don’t really pick up for the year until the Easter holidays begin, which gives us plenty of time to get set up for the year.
We have had quite a few students in, including a film crew filming a short on the Cornish “Owlman” and a number of interesting research project going on in the library; from Alchemy to the forensic investigation of occult crime! Musician Sean Fitzgerald, who was over from Dublin recording his “Wizards horse” album spent the day in the museum prior to his performance of the surreal Absurdist folk epic “The Wizards horse” on the 4th of Feb, inspired by the museum ,in the Cornish Bank in Falmouth.
We have once again been hosting Tarot, divination and fortune telling on Saturdays 12-5pm with our resident fortune tellers. This month we have Paul with his charm readings and Liz with here Tarot. We have also had our new crystal ball reader Rachael Eva join the team.
There have been a number of new acquisitions and donations over the winter which will be making an appearance. We ran out of space in the museum years ago, but we don’t go with the minimalist/put-it-in-storage thing! We keep managing to defy physics and prise more space out of the old building. New displays in the museum include an extensive re-jig of the wizards den and the construction of a new cabinet displaying the mysteries of the Cult of the Phoenician Goddess Tanit.
Upstairs we have put in a small display celebrating the tenth anniversary of the now legendary “Ancient scent project” in Lamorna in west Cornwall in which a small group of artist experimented with the automatic techniques pioneered by the occultist and surrealist artist and writer Ithell Colquhoun. I believe that this small understated project by a group of outsiders played a key part in the revival of interest of Colquhoun work.
The month was ended with another momentous “Stones, drones and noise club” evening in collaboration with Bolderdashes Jess Beechy. An evening of experimental sound with Free jazz noise and poetry from Theo. Alex and Eddie on tour from Leeds, Ethereal multi layered voices from Pneuma and Cornish semi conductor corporation using Cornish minerals and analogue circuitry to create sound. After a year of sold out performances we feel its outgrown the museum. Keep your eyes and ears open for further developments.
The museum received a micro-grant for a new museum laptop from Cornwall Council. This is the first grant money ever received. This leaky old ship is entirely kept afloat by door money, the shop, donations and blind optimism. We are entirely dependant upon your goodwill and support …it is much appreciated.
